Bill, don't settle for anything _less_ than a machine with an x040
processor. By this, I intend to _exclude_ those models with an LCx040
processor. This suggestion is based on my experiences with "interim"
hardware and the "sx" nature of the LCx040 chip. You'd be better off if
you could gaff some PowerMac's -- not because of the processor power, but
simply because it will obsolete slower (next month instead of yesterday ;)
Also, whether it is necessary now or not, try for (>) 8MB RAM and at least
500MB HDD. My guess is that you'll opt for MicroWorlds or HyperStudio
(unless all of your students are future computer science types -> Object
Logo) and you'll need this and more to do justice to their multimedia
capabilities.
Isn't Roger Wagner promising ;) a Windows version of HyperStudio? This
becomes an important consideration when you mention the possibility of PC
notebooks.
When Apple starts to obsolete it's current notebook models in preparation
for the introduction of RISC based machines, prices may become more
accessible. I don't know any particulars so this is only conjecture.
Yes, you can. If my memory serves you can purchase a 10 station license
pack for Macintosh workstations (Netware 3.12, I've no experience with
other versions).
Of these options, my only experience is with Object Logo. I recommend it
highly, with the above caveat.
Please not that I have adopted George Mills' freeware "MSWLogo" for my
classes here at TTU and with local schoolkids. It is a wonderful product
in its own right, although $ was a major factor in its favor. Jim
Mueller (forgive me if spelling is goofed, Jim) & YPLA (aka the
Compuserve LOGO forum) are also distributing a SUPER book for use with
this (and other) Logo dialects. The last I knew he was hunting for a
publisher but distributing paper copies personally ($35US I think) and
electronically through Compuserve. This is another option if your school
board screws you to the PC platform.
