This won't help Mike's situation but I think many teachers who use new
Macs don't realize that you can "lock" the mouse ball with a paper clip
by putting it in the little hole on the underside of the mouse and
turning clockwise. It will remain locked until you use a paper clip and
turn it back counter-clockwise. I think all Macs starting with the 580 have
this feature. Paper clips are almost free. ;-)

Actually I've never had a mouse ball stolen but until I read the manual
and discovered the locking feature, several students had the mouse balls
fall out while using the mouse.
